Sara & Ryan's Shenandoah National Park Elopement

Vows on the Little Stony Man trail with the whole Shenandoah Valley below, then a ranch reception at River's Bend Ranch in Page County: an autumn elopement that hiked first and danced after.

Some couples want a wedding you drive to. Sara and Ryan wanted one you hike to. They said their vows on the Little Stony Man trail in Shenandoah National Park, on a rock outcrop with the whole valley patchworked out below them, and then came down the mountain to a ranch reception with everyone they love. It is one of my favorite days I have ever photographed in the Shenandoah Valley.

The hike in

A park elopement is a real hike with real permits and real weather, and this day brought all three: it rained on the drive up, so they started the trail under clear umbrellas, Sara in a white fur jacket over her dress. The trail did what the trail does in autumn: went gold overhead and dropped leaves all over the path.

Vows on the rocks

The ceremony was small and vertical: the two of them, their officiant, and a cliff edge with the Shenandoah Valley falling away behind it. The wind moved her dress the entire time, and every photograph is better for it.

Down the mountain to River's Bend Ranch

Then the second wedding day started. River's Bend Ranch sits on 250 acres in Stanley, in Page County, with the Shenandoah River along one edge and the Blue Ridge stacked behind the ceremony site. Their friends and family were waiting, and Sara and Ryan walked a rug-lined aisle to a triangle arch with the mountains in full autumn color behind it.

Dusk on the ranch

While the party warmed up, the ranch went quiet outside: a white horse grazing at the fence line, a sliver of moon over the hills, and the last pink light on the ridge. We stepped out one more time at blue hour, because you always step out one more time at blue hour.
