Why winter is the best time to get married on the Texas Gulf coast

Almost everyone books a Texas coast wedding for spring or autumn, and almost everyone is wrong. Winter on the Gulf coast has better weather, no hurricane risk, empty beaches and lower prices, and the only reason nobody argues for it is that the local wedding industry is quiet in winter too. Here is the case for February.

Hurricane season is simply over

Atlantic hurricane season runs June to the end of November. A wedding between December and March sits completely outside it.

That is not a small convenience. It is the removal of the single largest planning risk on this coast, and it is the one risk no amount of contingency really solves. This shoreline took a serious hit from Harvey in 2017 and the towns rebuilt. An autumn date on the Gulf means carrying that possibility all the way to the day. A February date does not.

The weather is actually better

Summer here is hot and humid, and August is punishing. Autumn stays warm and humid well into the season. Spring is genuinely lovely and it is also when everybody else arrives.

Winter is mild. That is the whole reason people from the rest of the country spend winters on this coast, and it has been the reason for a hundred years. Mild is not a compromise at a wedding; mild is what you actually want when forty people are standing on sand in clothes they cannot adjust.

The beaches are empty, and no permit buys you that

This is the part couples underestimate. On this coast, a beach permit does not reserve the beach. Corpus Christi will take a $100 non-refundable beach event fee and the sand stays open to the public. You are buying permission, not privacy.

So the only thing that actually gives you an empty beach is picking a date and time when nobody else wants to be there. A Tuesday morning in January does that. A Saturday afternoon in July cannot be bought into doing it at any price.

Spring break is worse still. It turns the barrier islands into somewhere you would not choose to hold a ceremony, and it lands squarely in the season most couples are aiming for.

It costs less

Winter is off-season for the wedding industry down here, which means more availability, more flexible venues, and accommodation that is not priced against spring break or summer holidays. You are not bidding against anyone for a Saturday.

Your guests want to come

Worth saying out loud. If your family is anywhere north of Texas, an invitation to the Gulf coast in February is a considerably more attractive proposition than the same invitation in July. You are not asking them to travel to a wedding, you are giving them a reason to leave winter.

What you give up

Being straight about the trade, because there is one.

Evenings get cool. Cold fronts come through. A strapless dress and no plan is a miserable last hour. Layers, a wrap, a blanket, a fire if the venue allows it.

Swimming is not reliable. If the picture in your head is everyone in the water afterward, that is a summer picture.

Sea turtle nesting is spring and summer. The hatchling releases at Padre Island National Seashore are extraordinary and they are not a winter event.

Days are shorter. Which matters more than people expect when you are planning around light. Sunset comes early, so the ceremony has to come early too, and that is a schedule decision rather than a problem.

So what does a winter coast wedding actually look like?

A weekday, because that is free and it does more for privacy than anything you can pay for. An early-afternoon ceremony so the light is still good and nobody is cold yet. Bare sand rather than a rented arch, because the beach in January does not need decorating. Dinner somewhere with walls.

And a permit sorted in advance, from whichever of the six different authorities on this coast covers the stretch of sand you picked. They all charge differently: Rockport is free under ten people, Port Aransas is $50 for up to three hundred, Corpus is $100 and reserves nothing.

Sort the Texas marriage licence before you travel, too. There is a 72-hour waiting period that catches out couples flying in, and one of the ways around it also takes $60 off the fee.

Why I am telling you this

Straightforwardly: winter is when I am here. My family lives on the Texas Gulf coast, my calendar at home between DC and the Blue Ridge is quiet from December, and so every winter I come down and take a limited number of wedding and elopement dates, December through March, with travel already included. Windows go out each September.

So I have an interest in this argument. I also think it is true, and the weather data, the hurricane calendar and the crowd numbers are not mine. Every reason above holds whether you hire me or somebody local.
