How to elope in West Virginia

West Virginia is one of the easiest states in the country to get married in. The licence costs $56, drops to $36 if you take a four-hour class, there is no waiting period at all if you are both over 18, and there is no residency requirement, so it does not matter where you live. That is the paperwork done in one paragraph. The rest of this is where to actually stand, which changes enormously depending on which end of a very long state you are in.
How do you get a marriage licence in West Virginia?
Both of you, in person, at any county clerk's office. If you live here, use the county nearest home. If you are coming from out of state, use whichever clerk is most convenient to where you are getting married. There is no residency requirement to work around.
- $56, or $36 if you have completed a four-hour premarital education course within the past year. A county or two lists it a dollar higher, so confirm when you call.
- No waiting period if you are both 18 or over. The licence works the moment it is issued. Under 18 there is a two-day wait after filing.
- Valid for 60 days.

- Your officiant can be a professional or a friend who gets ordained and registers with the state. Sort the registration well before the week of.
Where are the best places to elope in West Virginia?
The state is long and the two ends have almost nothing in common. Pick by how far you want to drive and how much of the day you want to spend walking.
Harpers Ferry and the Eastern Panhandle
The most accessible corner, ninety minutes from DC and Baltimore, where the Potomac and the Shenandoah meet under the Blue Ridge. A stone town stacked up a hillside, overlooks that do half the work, and enough small inns to keep the day private.

Shepherdstown and the river towns
Twenty minutes upriver, the oldest town in the state and where I live. Brick storefronts, stone walls, a bluff over the Potomac, and the densest cluster of good venues in the Panhandle. If you want a small wedding rather than a two-person elopement, this is where the options are: I have written up thirteen venues within about an hour.
New River Gorge National Park
The state's newest national park and its most dramatic landscape. A thousand-foot gorge, waterfalls dropping into the canyon, abandoned mining towns in the woods, and the bridge. It is a long way from the Panhandle, four hours or so, and it is the single most spectacular thing in West Virginia.
Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob
The high country in the Monongahela National Forest. Dolly Sods is the highest plateau east of the Mississippi and looks more like Canada than the mid-Atlantic: wind-flagged spruce, open heath, bare rock. Spruce Knob is the state's highest point. Both are properly remote, both reward the drive, and neither is somewhere to bring anyone who cannot walk on uneven ground.
Blackwater Falls and the Canaan Valley
Between the two, and the easiest of the mountain options to actually reach. Waterfalls, a high valley that holds snow well into spring, and lodges that will host a small wedding. When should you elope in West Virginia?
Autumn
October is the best single month in the state and it is not particularly close. The temperature drops into comfortable hiking range and the ridges turn over week by week. It is also when everyone else comes, so take a weekday if you want the overlook to yourself.
Spring
The quiet alternative and my own favourite. Waterfalls run hardest as the snow leaves, wildflowers come through the gorge, and the hills green up before the crowds arrive. It rains more, which people treat as a problem and which I mostly do not.
Summer
Warm and green, with high temperatures usually in the low 80s, which is far more bearable than the same month on the coast. Swimming holes are the reason to be here. Busy, so marry at either end of the day.
Winter
Cold, often below freezing, and close to empty. Waterfalls freeze. Bare trees open up views that are hidden the other nine months. If having a place entirely to yourselves matters more than being comfortable, this is the trade, and it is a real one.

Planning the day itself
Two things couples underestimate, both of which have their own answers here. Photographs take less time than most timelines assume, about fifteen minutes for the two of you, and the real variable is light, which moves by hours across the season. And a second location costs you a block of afternoon rather than just a drive, which matters more on an elopement than on a wedding because the whole point was to not be managed.
